Please support Transformation through our Rowing Equipment Drive
Dear Rowing Fraternity
Rowing South Africa (RowSA) is thankful for the support from its constituents and clubs in helping transform our sport. We are producing results on the international stages of rowing but need to work hard at meeting targets set by Sports and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) through their EPG transformation measurement project.
RowSA have been able to address some of the transformation challenges through our Indoor Rowing Development programme. Thanks to this program Rowing and indoor rowing is accessible in all the 9 provinces of SA. Our Indoor rowing development programme has enabled RowSA to move in the right direction of the goals set by SRSA which is to ensure that sporting codes transform and are accessible in all geographical areas, by all gender, race and most of all previously disadvantaged areas. But there is still a lot of work to be done!
In 2016 we decided to go around the county and identify water facilities which are row-able and closer to all our indoor rowing teams. We were surprised by our findings - see the table of facilities we found.
To transform our sport it will take more than having indoor rowing clubs across the country, it will require transforming water rowing. We are challenged to see an increase of black rowers on the water moving through the advanced pipeline to our high performance squads.
We would like the rowing fraternity to join us in our journey to transform our sport. The ROWING EQUIPMENT DRIVE is a project we think we can run and with your help we believe change is possible. In our recent and successful learn to row camps run in various areas (including two of the new areas: Orkney and Bonkolo dam), we were delighted to have clubs like St Johns College, The University of Johannesburg, Wemmer Pan rowing club, Buffalo rowing club and Durban rowing club partner with us by sharing their resources. As a start to this drive project, King Edwards and Germiston High have donated boats which we will be renovating. This has already showed that if we stand together as a community, we can definitely change the outlook of our code.
So our plea to you is to donate any of the rowing equipment that you may no longer be using- Boats, Blades, rowing machines, coaching boats, Para-rowing seats etc. Our plan is to create starter packs for new rowing clubs made up of a trailer loaded with water ready equipment. Rowing machines will be distributed to all areas on the poster attached.
Your participation will be highly appreciated.
