About Rowing South Africa (RowSA)

RowSA is the sole governing body for the sport of rowing in South Africa. The organisation is recognised with this status by SASCOC and Sport and Recreation South Africa.

Rowing administration in South Africa

RowSA was established in 1934 (under the name of SAARU) to control rowing in South Africa. RowSA controls, administers, manages and co-ordinates rowing and rowing competition in South Africa; controls and manages international competition by national representative rowers in international competition and sanctions international competition by non-representative rowers. The sport of Rowing consists of the Olympic and Paralympic Discipline and Indoor Rowing on ergo machines which represents the mass participation discipline of the sport. RowSA has participated in the Olympic Games since 1928.

RowSA has two primary goals:

  • Transformation and development - RowSA is committed to transforming the sport of rowing across race, gender, disability and geographical spread.
  • Win more medals - RowSA has an objective of winning medals across all disciplines of our sport: senior, para, U23 and junior. In particular our aim is to focus on the sustainability of rowing from one Olympic cycle to the another, with the aim for this Olympic cycling being 3 senior medals and 2 para medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
